Travel rewards credit cards reward you with miles or points every time you make a purchase, which you can trade for travel expenses. Usually, you can use your miles or points to get a free airline ticket to wherever you want to go. Points or miles can sometimes also be traded in for hotel expenses, rental cars, attraction tickets and many other rewards. Frequent flyers can use those miles or points to redeem their rewards faster.

There are a lot of companies out there that offer air mile cards. You can choose to get one online, through a bank, or even a credit card company. All of them are individual, and come with specific features and benefits. Before you select your card, you should always look at different companies and cards and compare them. Here are some factors to consider:

Number of points or miles gained every time you spend a dollar

Expiration and blackout dates (some companies have decided to drop them completely)

What type of purchases earn rewards. (Some purchases may not be included in your reward incentives. Larger purchases, such as televisions or furniture, may have more or fewer miles included.)

Interest rate. Some air miles cards have higher-than-normal annual rates, so if you normally carry a balance you should ensure that the value of the points or miles you’ll earn make up for the increased interest you’ll pay.

Annual fee. Although your rewards may sound great, you don’t want to pay too much in fees just to reap the benefits.

Even though they have been around for many years, air mile credit cards are very popular for those who like to travel. They can also assist with rental cars and hotel expenses as well, as long as you use the points you have accumulated by using your card. To get the most out of travel rewards credit cards, you should use your card frequently. You can really rack up the points if you purchase everything you can with your credit card instead of using cash.

Travel rewards credit cards are great to have, as long as you don’t end up paying an arm and a leg in fees, and the annual rate isn’t that high. If you check into what each card issuer offers, you can normally get a great deal.

When consumers get in over their heads in debt, many of them turn to some form of unsecured credit card debt consolidation as a method dealing with mounting bills. Unfortunately, the debt consolidation process can be extremely confusing for the average person.

Few consumers know what their options are when it comes to consolidating unsecured debt and credit cards. As a result, many consumers are caught by surprise at some point in the process. These surprises can often end up costing the consumer a large amount of money.

Most consumers consolidate their unsecured debt to take advantage of lower interest rates or lower monthly payments on their credit cards and other unsecured debt. However, there are a few potential surprises to watch out for.

The first thing many consumers do not understand is that they may be risking their home. If you consolidate unsecured credit card debt by refinancing your home or using a home equity loan, you are actually converting those unsecured debts that have no collateral into a new, secured debt that uses your home as collateral!

Many consumers opt for unsecured credit card debt consolidation to take advantage of a lower interest rate. Most people reason that a lower interest rate means you will save money. However, this is not the whole story!

It is possible to get a lower interest rate and still end up paying more money than you would have originally. Consolidation through refinancing or home equity lines of credit may involve many large fees, transaction charges, or other hidden fees. If you do not factor in the cost of all fees and charges, you may end up paying a lot more money to obtain that lower interest rate.

Yet another surprise for many consumers also seems to be difficult for some to understand, but it is a fact of life in the world of credit card consolidation. It is also one of the most important facts to remember if you are trying to get out of debt and build wealth. Getting a lower monthly payment does not mean that you are saving money.

This “surprise” is actually fairly obvious to some, but absolutely mystifying to others. The truth is that in many cases a lower monthly payment on your debt will cost you more money in the long run, even at a lower interest rate. The longer it takes you to pay off your debt, the more money you will have to pay in interest and finance charges.

It is tempting for most people to take a lower monthly payment and have a little bit of extra spending money every month. However, you could often save much more money and get out of debt much faster by biting the bullet now and paying as much as you possibly can towards your debt. While you may have a little bit less cash now, once your debt is paid off you will have much more spending (and hopefully investing) money in your pocket.

If you are looking into your credit card consolidation options, it is important to get a good understanding of what will happen. By becoming informed, you can avoid nasty surprises and make financially smart decisions with unsecured credit card debt consolidation.

Most people advocate the case of credit cards, quoting the benefits and convenience that arises from them. However, there is another line-of-thought that strongly opposes credit cards all together. The primary reason given for this opposition is the resulting excessive credit card debt facing America. It is one of the most serious problems faced by the credit card holders and credit card industry as a whole.

However, you can’t pull the shutters on the credit card industry just because of a few irresponsible people (ok…so maybe it’s more than a few). That is not a solution for beating excessive credit card debt. Moreover, you can’t discount the many benefits associated with the credit cards.

The issue of excessive credit card debt can be looked at from two angles. First is addressing of the excessive credit card debt problem at the industry level and second is the addressing of the excessive credit card debt problem at the level of the individual. The first method involves increasing awareness of America’s debt problem to the masses. This is more or less being done currently too. However, there should also be an effort to tackle this problem of excessive credit card debt at an even deeper level. This means trying to devise a mechanism to nip the problem in the bud. This mechanism should actually be a part of the overall system. A lot of thought needs to go into devising such a mechanism.

Case studies should be taken up, statistics gathered and a proper forum formed (with representatives from the lenders and from consumer advocates). As of now, the credit card suppliers just seem to be engaged in coming out with new products and getting customers enrolled to those products. There is little attention paid towards addressing the problem of excessive credit card debt in the real sense. Something like attending mandatory seminars on the root causes of excessive credit card debt could be made part of the credit card application process. There could also be mechanisms for proactively warning the users about excessive credit card debt (based on their credit card usage) or even imposition of early restrictions on noticing the first signs that lead to excessive credit card debt At the individual level.

The reality is, a large-scale change is unlikely anytime soon. There is too much money to be made by the credit card companies and Americans are all to happy to live above their means. The only way we will see change is through financial education, however it may be brought to consumers.

If you are thinking about applying for a credit card online, there are bound to be some questions you would like answered. There are many sites that offer the convenience of an online application process, which will start you in the right direction. Any reputable credit company will ensure that all questions regarding applying for online credit are answered fully. It sounds simple but the first issue to be sorted out is where you find the application form on the website. Generally the website’s sitemap contains every page listed so you should have the all the information to hand where it can be found easily.

There are often many special deals on these websites at any one time and it is well worth looking out for these; some special offers can save the customer a great deal with discounts on anything from insurance to car rental. After you decide which offers appeal to you then you can apply for a credit card by clicking the ‘Apply Here’ button next to the offers that are of interest to you. An online application form will available as soon as you have hit the ‘Apply’ button. It is a really simple process and you will find that you can fill out a form in no time at all. You can put your mind at rest because the information you provide is secure as well as the process being convenient.

There will of course be information that you will need to provide the finance company when you apply for a credit card, so consider this next. Having all the information required ready should speed up the process. Filling out forms online without the information can delay the process enormously. The last thing you want to do when is have to stop to find the necessary details they require. Many people are able to remember details like this from memory.

The application will ask for the usual information like your name and address and date of birth. However, you may need to refer to information like your driver’s license number or social security number. Provide all the information is correct it shouldn’t take long to receive your answer. When you apply for a credit card online the hardest thing you have to do is wait for a response to the application. The time you will have to wait depends on each credit card company so there are no hard and fast rules.

Delays of up to a couple of weeks are quite normal for some credit card companies although many are much faster than this. A poor credit record can mean when you apply for a credit card you will have to wait longer for an answer. Always try to maintain a good payment record as it pays. Security for applications carried out online is paramount and you get to decide which card to apply for.

The invention of credit card has given the average consumers the ability to do their purchase with incredible convenience. There is no need to carry wads of dollar bills around. On the flip side, it also allows them to spend beyond their financial limit, which means they are able to buy big ticket items or things they normally cannot afford using cash.

With the ease of credit card spending comes the ease of accumulating debt. More and more card owners are carrying a balance on their cards. The average credit card debt per household in USA is about $9,840 in 2007. That means the national debt figure is in the multi-billion range!

If many of them, debt elimination looks like mission impossible. However, debt happens mainly due to poor financial decisions and bad spending habits. By taking responsibility of your debt situation, you can and will eliminate debt.

One way to bring the credit card debt under control is to consolidate them. This means that you gather all your credit card dues and consolidate them into one monthly payment. Why should you do this?

First of all, it is easier to manage one source of debt than trying to deal with multiple sources. You only need to remember one due date and one monthly payment figure per month.

Secondly, this action will reduce the total amount of interest incurred.

Thirdly, you will have a better cash flow, as the monthly payment is usually lower.

With a lower monthly payment, you will not likely to default on your repayment schedule, which means no late fee penalty.

As you continue to do payment on time and on schedule, your debt will reduce and your credit history will gradually improve.

In the long run, you will save more money as you pay less interest. In the event that you need a loan for a house (after full repayment), the good credit history that your build up along the way will qualify you for a lower interest rate.

Credit card debt consolidation isn’t a magic wand that can solve all your debt problems. It only help to make your life easier by reducing the interest and improving cash flow. The important thing is to cultivate good spending habit and not to buy things that you cannot afford. The ultimate goal is to eliminate your debt sooner than later. As long as you make a commitment to get out of debt and take action, you can be debt free in a few years time, if not sooner.

If you are a frequent traveler, you probably make a lot of your purchases overseas using your credit cards. From dining, accommodations and other daily expenses, the amount spent can be pretty significant. This is not a bad thing as you will likely accumulate a lot of reward points. As most credit card companies have an online presence, you can redeem your credit card points anywhere in the world as long as you have an Internet connection.

If your card is tied to an airline reward program, you can redeem free air tickets using your points. But free air travel is not the only thing that is useful.

Visit the website of your credit card company and look up the section that lists all the rewards. Some of the rewards include book vouchers, spa vouchers, home appliances. free movie tickets, gasoline vouchers and a long list of other useful stuff. Some even include free credits, which is equivalent to free money and can be used to offset your outstanding balance.

You can also use your points to waive off your credit card annual fee, if there is one. However, you may want to use the points to redeem the rewards first. Then call up the customer service representative to request for an annual fee waiver. If you use your credit card on a regular basis, you will very likely get a waiver. This way, you can maximize the value of your reward points.

You should check the amount of reward points you have once every month. It should be reflected in your monthly statement. Alternatively, you can call the credit card companies customer service hotline number and enquire about your points. However, a faster way is to check them online by visiting the credit card company website. Besides checking your reward points status, it is very likely you can also redeem points for the rewards you want immediately online.

Bear in mind that you should spend only when the need arise and not for the purpose of accumulating reward points. For most of the rewards available, their retail values tend to be much lower. For example, you may need to charge $100 worth of purchase to your credit card before you accumulate enough points to redeem a movie ticket worth $10. Thus it is much cheaper to purchase the ticket off the counter than trying to get it free from credit card reward program.

If you are not a frequent flyer, you can try to charge your essential expenditures, such as grocery and gas purchases, to your credit card. This way you will still be able to reap the benefits of the reward programs without the need for excessive spending.

Today’s consumers are very demanding. They are used to the fast pace of modern day society and want everything to be done in a fast and efficient manner. And this apply to credit card applications as well. No one like to go through the hassle of filling up a lengthy form and then end up with a rejection letter from the credit card company.

Before any credit card applications, the first thing you should do is to do a thorough review of your credit history. Thus the first thing is to get your credit report and review it thoroughly.

There are three credit bureaus that you need to deal with. You should your credit report from each of the them. They do not share information and thus their records are not identical. You have to spend some time looking through each of the reports.

You should look out for records such as bankruptcy, late payments, rejected applications and other negative data. In fact, you should also verify your personal data such as residential address and name.

Contact the respective bureau and try to remove as many negative records as possible. You want your credit report to be as positive as possible. The goal is to show potential lenders that you are a responsible person who can handle your own personal finance well.

All credit card companies will request a copy of your credit report upon receiving your application. They need to do this to access the credit risk that you pose to them. If you have been paying your mortgage loans or auto loans on time, this is a good sign that you are managing your finance well and should be low risk.

In addition, the credit card companies will check for records such as delayed payments on recent or previous cards, utility bills or loans as well as the number of rejected applications, if any. If there are too many inquires into your credit report recently, it may indicate to other credit card companies that you pose a high risk as you are trying to get more credit within a short time.

If you are applying for low interest rate credit card, a clean credit history is very important. Low interest rate are often awarded to applicants who are consider low risk only.

By understanding your credit history, you can make attempts to fix any errors or negative records that exist in your credit report. This involve some works on your part but it really can make your credit card application hassle free.

The credit card industry is extremely competitive and thus each credit card company will go all the way out to promote their products by offering a lot of perks and privileges.

One of the most common perks is zero APR for six to twelve months. This perk is becoming so common that many consumers are considering this as standard benefit. However, do check out the on-going interest rate after the promotional period. It is usually quite a large jump, so you have to be mentally prepared and try your best not to carry a balance.

Another one is the waiver of annual fee for the first year. This is a common practice too. Thus, some companies are now offering annual fee waiver for three to five years. In fact, a handful of them are waiving the annual fee on a permanent basis as long as the credit card users are able to meet specific purchase and payment targets.

The reward program is another important component of the credit card deal. The type and range of rewards available can be a decisive factor in keeping existing customer as well as attracting new one. Thus many companies will spend a lot of effort to provide the best rewards for their customers.

A good reward program will offer a lot of flexibility to the credit card users. This includes a low exchange rate, which means the card owners can exchange for rewards with less reward points, which translate to lower expenditure. The rewards should also cover a wide range of products such as movie tickets, home appliances, dining vouchers, spa discount voucher, furniture, or even travel miles.

No card owners want to stick with a card that offer one type of rewards. As an example, if you own a departmental card that allow you to redeem discount voucher for ABC Departmental Store only, this will be too restrictive. It ill be difficult to attract new customers or keep existing customers since there are so many more options available else where.

Besides rewards, some credit card companies also offer other benefits without extra cost. This include personal insurance, travel insurance, rebate at the pump and zero interest installments for big ticket purchase.

Your personal lifestyle is the most important factor in deciding which credit card perks are the best. The right credit card perks can add significant value to you current lifestyle while the wrong one will give you unnecessary headaches.

When you apply for a credit card, all the different type of interest rates mentioned on the application form probably confuses you.

The most common interest rate is the APR, which credit card companies like to quote as the interest rate for using their card. This is known as the Annual Percentage Rate, which is calculated on a yearly basis.

However, credit card companies do not do their interest rate calculation once a year. They do it on a monthly basis. The interest is applied to your unpaid outstanding balance is calculated by dividing the APR by 12. This is called the monthly periodic rate.

Every month, this monthly periodic rate is applied to whatever outstanding balance that is not paid. This is the compounding effect of interest rate and is refer to as compounding interest. By factoring into the compounding effect, what have is called the Effective Annual Rate (EAR). This rate is much higher than the quoted APR rate.

Most of the credit card companies will offer two type of APR for their cards. The first one is the introductory rate, which is a very low rate and last for six months to a year. In many cases, the introductory rate is zero percent. Once the introductory period is over, second type of APR will comes in. This is often called the ongoing APR, which can be a huge jump from the introductory interest rate. Thus it is imperative to check the ongoing rate before applying for the credit card.

In addition, the ongoing APR can be fixed or variable.

A variable APR means that the rate will fluctuate according to changes to economic indicators such as the Prime Rate or the LIBOR Rate.

On the other hand, a fixed rate is not dependent on such economic indicators but it does not mean it stay unchanged over time. The credit card company can, and will, change it if necessary. However, it will do so after giving you some form of notification first. Unless the economy is facing some serious problem, the fixed APR can stay unchanged for many months.

The all the interest rate stuffs is making your head swim, you just need to do one thing. And that is to pay your credit card balance in full and on time. If you do this every month, there is really no need to worry about the interest rate.

Credit card debt is beginning to cripple many people who are finding themselves with huge debts; despite the financial problems, card issue is not falling. With the debts rising, it is not surprising that individuals have started to realize the financial problem they have created by the constant and indiscriminate spending they have carried out. Generally speaking the only way out of this predicament is by using a credit card debt relief solution.

At this point it is important to start as you mean to go on and stop all spending on the card otherwise it will make arranging a debt relief plan much harder to implement. The reluctance to make a decision can create further delays to obtaining credit card debt relief. Of the options available, three in particular come to mind as the best ways to approach the debt consolidation problem.

The easiest method of debt consolidation is where the person still has a good credit rating and uses another credit card that has a low rate of interest where all the debts can be transferred to one card. Consolidation loans are becoming popular as all the debts can be replaced with just one amount which should be considerably easier to pay on a regular basis. This option does require a certain level of commitment on the debtor’s part as once the debts are clear there must be no temptation to use them again. This option will not work if the credit standing of the debtor is poor and they are not in a financial position to pay off their debts monthly.

The next step if their credit history will not allow credit card debt relief is to use the services of a debt relief agency that can negotiate paying the debt off. Normally, when these negotiations proceed approximately half the debt will need to be paid and the remainder to be written off by the creditors. If all else fails the debtor is left with bankruptcy to clear the debts but this is not something that should ever be looked upon as the first course of action as there are serious consequences to be considered. The debts may be clear but they will find it hard to get any form of credit for a long time and will have to rebuild their credit history from scratch although it does enable them to have a fresh start. Credit card debt relief should not be something you ever repeat because it will mean you haven’t learnt anything from your experience.
